Weekend Inspiration: Big Beautiful Lashes

28 Jun

Happy Monday Babydolls!!!! I hope that everyone had an eventful and fun weekend. I very much enjoyed mine AND I received some awesome inspiration!!! This week will be totally devoted to makeup. I’m mainly focusing on eyes and skin this week. I will also give tips on caring for your makeup brushes and other tools.

Today’s post is all about falsies (fake eye lashes). I love falsies because they add so much drama to the eyes and really make them *POP*. I love love LOVE strip lashes. They scream old school sass and femininity. Nothing like batting those baby browns to get what you want from the booski LOL. But seriously though Babydoll, lashes are a great way to spice up your look and it is relatively easy to apply them.

Lash set from Sephora

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. lashes (your choice of strip or individual)
2. glue ( using dark brown or black lash glue dries with no white flakes)
3. tweezers
4. manicure or hair scissors

If you are using strip lashes, my advice is to cut them in half to make application easier. You can even cut them in fourths but be careful with this method so that when you apply the lashes they don’t look jagged and uneven. Once you have cut your strips or opened the packaging on your individuals, you can begin applying them. Squeeze out a little glue and holding the lash with your tweezers, dip the weft end in the glue. Wait about 15 to 20 seconds; this allows the glue to become tacky and less runny. Ensure that you don’t apply too much glue; you will have trouble removing them. Apply the lashes as close to your natural lash line as you can get them. Hold them in place with the tweezers for 10 seconds to set and release. Keep applying lashes until you have achieved your desired fullness and look. Once you have finished applying lashes, follow with a few coats of your fav. mascara. Personally I dig (with a major passion) Chanel Exceptionnel Lash! It has a 6-sided brush that is to DIE for! I also love love love Dior Show. Whatever brand you decide to use is up to you. From here, you can let your imagination run wild! Experiment with eyeliner and create sexy  60’s cat eyes or get golden like the 70’s. To remove them, simply use a eye makeup remover.

Here are a few pics of my eyes after I used lashes.

Wave Pomade Feedback

25 Jun

I have another product review for you guys. This one is from my booski who tried the wave pomade. Here’s what he had to say

Okay give me a moment to step out my boyfriend aka booski role… Quick to the point, I like it.  I typically use Pro-line wave control pomade as well as Pro-line wave and styling gel (use both at the same time). I can honestly say that her pomade is able to give wave control like regular wave grease and also give you the moisture just like wave & style gel.  I did notice flakes in my hand from pomade but not in my hair- little soap and water can cure that problem.  I would like to mention that I do not have naturally wavy hair but my hair received shine and waves .  I rubbed a wet towel [all] over my head and the pomade came out easily. It has a great smell too.

I also gave a sample to my mother and aunt for their thoughts as well. Both have close cut ceasars (that they rock FIIIEEERCEly might I add). They love it! I plan to interview them for an update to this post.

So far i have received really positive feedback from my testers and thats very encouraging. My thoughts? Well personally, the smell is to die for! It is so fresh and clean and crisp… like a sunny day! The consistency? Ehh not so much. When I think of pomade I think of thick consistency, although many newer versions of pomade are lighter and silkier. So again, I’m dissatisfied with the texture of the product but the good news is that I have found a way to conquer this and achieve the consistency and texture I desire. I do like the moisturizing effects though. Its jammed packed with moisturizers anyways so I expected this. The wave enhancement that the pomade provides is really nice too. The wave pattern in the pics above are even better up close [SEA SICK]! On a females hair who may not be so concerned with waves, the pomade lays the hair down and gets rid of the fly-a- ways. Overall I’m extremely happy with the pomade. At the time I made it, my hair was straight so I’m excited to try it on my curly hair!

Brown Suga’ Hair Gel

25 Jun

I had a business meeting about a week ago so I brought a sample of a product that is currently in R&D to the meeting. The product is a natural hair gel. It contains no alcohol, no parabens, no sulfates… non of that junk.

The great stuff that’s in it include, veggie oils like olive oil and carrot oil, honey, and of course brown sugar. The brown sugar gives it a really awesome smell… almost like cake candy or cake batter. Kinda makes you wanna lick it (fight the urge!).

I tested the gel in a few strands of my own hair and I asked a friend to try it and offer her thoughts. She prepared a video for me, giving her feedback; however, the video won’t embed in the blog so I paraphrased her thoughts below.

I tried the styling gel on a style I normally where to work [slicked back low pinned bun]. The styling gel went really well; at the end of the night it still has a nice firm hold. My hair is shiny and the gel smells really good! I can’t smell it once I put it on and wear it throughout the day but I like it. It didn’t really bring out my wave pattern like I would prefer. Normally I use a styling gel by Just For Me which provides a soft hold and brings out my wave pattern. The brown suga’ styling gel has a firmer hold and it doesn’t clump; I prefer a gel with a softer hold so this firmness I’m not used to. However it did slick down my edges and provide a shine to my hair which I love.

My thoughts on the gel? I like the moisture I feel once applied to my hair. I even sleep with the gel on those few strands just to see how well the gel withstands the tossing and turning of sleep. It held up pretty well… it could be better but I’m biased towards that because personally I LOVE hold and I just think that nothing is better than a freshly washed head of hair when applying product. Anyways, I do agree that the formula needs some improvements. May have to develop two versions of this product; one with a softer hold and one with a firm hold. Lastly, I over shot on the viscosity of the gel. I had a consistency in mind something like Komaza Care’s Coconut hair pudding (love Love LOVE that stuff). I ended up with something a little thicker than Komaza Care’s; I think that is attributed to the tablespoon of corn starch I added for thickness. I’m going to give it another go and cook up another batch minus the cornstarch and see how it does. I posted some pics below of the strand test on my hair… one thing I must say is that the gel provided great curl and wave definition and you gotta LOVE that!

Eye Candy

22 Jun

Had a date with the booski last Sat (we went ice skating) so i got all dolled up just for him. I wanted very intense eyes that smoldered … wanted to make him wanna stare into my beautiful browns all night HAHA… check it below

Then today I ventured out to work instead of staying home in the same ol’ atmosphere. I was very studious today so I went goody girl pink with a touch of subtly seductiveness.

FREEEEEDOM!… and it looks good on YOU

22 Jun

AGH! why is it so hard to pick up wifi in certain places?! Like seriously I love the freedom of being able to pick up the notebook and venture somewhere to post nu blogs or whatever but if it’s this hard to pick up wifi I would rather have a cord attached to me at all times!!! [woooSAAAAA] okay that was my rant for the day. On to the next.

So anyone that knows me knows that I absolutely LOATHE paying for things that I clearly can do myself. Case in point my toes. I refuse to pay $20 to $30 for a pedicure when I have a boat load of polish at home along with polish remover and a steady hand. I can sit in my own tub that I can verify has been cleaned to within an inch of its life ( yes I am a certified germ-a-phobe) and I know I will not end up with a nasty fungus or some other creature going on my foot. Every once in a while the booski will treat me to a “spa day” where I get my toes done and to be honest the jets are AWESOME! But seriously a lil elbow grease and a pumice stone work just as well. But yea the point (there is a point I promise) here that I am making is that I don’t like being swindled out of my hard-earned cash just to realize I could have done it myself and spent that money on shoes or FOOD! This frustration is shared by many of my homegirls. We are sick of paying for things that savvy, 21st century women like ourselves are perfectly capable of doing on our own. I mean who says that we HAVE to spend 2 hours in the nail salon and even longer in the hair salon in order to be considered beautiful, well- kept and stylish? Who says that we have to spend ridiculous amounts of money being waxed, tweezed, plucked, poked and rubbed just to feel good about ourselves. Yes, massages and pedis and manis and a good scalp tingling hair washing are soooooooooooooooooo relaxing and well deserved for us hard-working women but Christ y does the ish cost so much????! I want more bang for my buck and an extra dollar in my pocket. Like I said before, I would rather spend that money on shoes and food (if you’re noticing a trend here, yes I like to eat!). So ummm yea where am I going with this? [SCROLL DOWN]

Be self-made ladies and gentlemen (I have a few male readers;); how many women wear a “side-part under”?  Be self-reliant; how many women HAVE to have a hair stylist, manicurist, nail tech… whatever because they can’t or don’t know how to do it themselves? Be you… naturally; how many women are conforming to societal Norms for various reasons?! Think about your beauty regime. Now think about how much of that regime requires someone else to keep it up, looking right and tight like you like. If you can count more than 2 ppl you see regularly to keep you “together” then maybe you ought to rethink this regime. I feel that the whole point of all these treatments we give ourselves are so we can enjoy life to its fullest and have some degree of freedom about ourselves. If you are spending at least 2 hours in one establishment 3 and 4 times a week or more just to feel good, are you really accomplishing what you intended to? Are you that much more relaxed or happy or free? That was my realization a few years ago while sitting in a hair salon getting my do did. I had been there since 10a and it was well after 3p when I finally walked out with &60 fewer in my pockets! Needless to say I never went back to that hair stylist… I found someone else though and continued this trend of giving up half my morning to the salon trap, all be it my time spent dec. from 5.5 hours to about 2.5. Still I wasn’t all that ecstatic about it. That feeling of dissatisfaction only intensified when I returned to school that fall for my last year of undrgrad. i hadn’t had the opportunity to get to my hair stylist before the start of the semester. I mean of course I had to be fly and fresh to death for the first day! C’mon son I had an image and reputation to uphold (I’m not joking) so I had to come up with something. I wasn’t going to allow any other stylist to do my hair so I turned to a trusted friend who is a hella of  a braider for some sleek and skinny cornrows. That did the trick… til I had to take them jokers out and deal with the hair underneath. Shortly thereafter I made the decision to go natural. I said to hell with all the salon time and the waiting and the scheduling. Honestly, it was the best decision I have made besides falling in love with Jesus. I had so much freedom! It was wonderful! As the relaxer continued to grow out and I begin to see the beautiful texture that was lying underneath patiently waiting for a chance to show off its glory, I was falling in love all over again. No a year and some change later I am 100% au natural and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

I say all this just to say that I want you to enjoy you Dollface! If you chose to relax… Fine! If you chose to be natural… Great! That’s a personal decision that one makes after much thought and reflection. Do what fits you and your lifestyle. Just know that natural can be achieved by all of us not just the certain few with a certain hair type. It is one step on the road to total self acceptance and a freeing journey that will be completely and uniquely yours… unlike any other persons.

Xisses and Hugz Dollface!

So…. I cut my hair… MYSELF!

19 Jun

Yes yes I cut my hair myself. I know right… GENIUS! I was in dire need of a haircut after I took my braids out and I couldn’t get in to see a hair stylist nor did I really trust one in town to do it. So me being the problem solver that I am, I went against everyones advice and cut it myself. I figured a trim would be easy enough to do- I mean I have done it before- but I wanted layers and the ability to feather my hair when I want.  Yea I know right, my extra self had to have something more than just a trim?! I’m always the one that wants the above and beyond… damn over achiever! Sometimes I get on my own nerver… but I digress.

Here we go step by step. [CAUTION TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK]

  1. I gave myself guidelines. I marked my face where I would want my layers to fall using black eyeliner.
  2. I sectioned off my hair and secured each section with clips.
  3. I started with the top middle section and begin cutting 1 inch away at a time ’til I was satisfied.

It turned out really good! *fist pump* The best part is I can wear this cut natural or straight. [VERSATILITY!] I didn’t get the top layers as short as I intially wanted but I can always go back and cut more. You can always take it off but you definitely can’t put it back! LOL.

Wave Pomade… needs a name thou

18 Jun

Hello… good morning! So last night I got in a nu shipment of supplies from this bomb site Bramble Berry! It was a great day at my house to say the least lol. Anyways, later that night – yea I wait til late at night to go in the “lab” cuz this heat down here don’t play- I went in the lab to get to work. I have a few recipes that I’ve been waiting to cook up for awhile but I decided to start work on the wave pomade… at my booski’s request of course.

Some of the ingredients

I started around 7 and different emerge til 10. It was well worth it thou cuz I think that I made something pretty damn awesome. This wave pomade was designed with a man in mind but it can totally be used by both sexes. It has a nice lemony smell… very fresh and clean and not too overpowering. It was designed to give moisture and staying power all in one [POW].  A few of the ingredients include sunflower oil, shea butter and glycerin. Those three ing. right there scream MOISTURIZE ME! The product is currently in testing by a few loyal “fans”. I will post excerpts of the feedback once I get it.

So proud of myself for making this though. My chem classes really did pay off… BTW did I mention I have a BSc in Biochemistry? Yea I’m a nerd… a fly one at that. Anywho, I’m overall pleased with the way the pomade turned out. I came pretty close to the consistency of  what I want the final product to be. The pomade is a tad “loose” like jello that has begun to melt (? yall know what I mean?) Anyone know how to get a thicker consistency without using petroleum or mineral oils? Those two are the DEVIL reincarnated (no seriously).

Feedback and ideas are always welcomed. Thanks 4 reading.

The final product as it cools

Hello Gorgeous

18 Jun
I’ve always wanted to write a blog. Ever since I logged onto http://www.theybf.com for the very first time over three years ago.  It was an amazing “first time” I must say… S/outs to Natasha who writes that blog. So anyways I never really had the time to blog nor did I have much to say back then. So here I am now… with loads to write about and the perfect venue to say it.
How did I get here though? It started along time ago… I mean alllloooonnnng time ago. I was little and I had mapped out my life plan! I was going to be a hair dresser and a nurse and a teacher… all at the same time! WHOA I was an ambitious kid way back then. As I grew though ppl begin to throw doubt my way about my ability to actually do it. I won’t lie it got to me too. I abandoned my ambitions of being a cosmetologist and owning my own business. I decided to take the road most traveled and become a doctor [snaps for the kid]. It was a good idea… in theory but after 5 years of college (yes 5- don’t ask), one degree and two jobs later, I have come full circle. I am back to where I started. So this is my journal babydoll! Welcome to it… I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. As I continue to blog, more of my story will unfold. For now thou this will have to do.
